PTE Academic Retell Lecture: Take Notes Without Losing the Main Idea

PTE Retell Lecture note-taking guide with headphones, microphone and notes

For PTE Academic Retell Lecture, useful notes preserve the speaker’s meaning rather than every word. Start with the topic, record two or three connected points, and explain how they fit together. A page full of isolated numbers is less helpful than a short, accurate outline. Understand the task before practising According to Pearson’s official speaking and writing format, after the audio finishes you have 10 seconds to prepare and 40 seconds to speak. Check the official instructions during preparation rather than relying on an old classroom handout. The aim is not to repeat a lecture word for word. Your response should communicate its main information in connected speech. Avoid inserting impressive-sounding statements that were not in the recording. A practical four-part note plan Topic: What is the talk about? Write a short label. Main message: What does the speaker want the listener to understand? Support: Record a reason, comparison or example that explains that message. Outcome: Note the conclusion, recommendation or limitation if one is given. Use arrows for cause and effect and abbreviations you already understand. Do not invent a new shorthand system on test day. Leave a little space between ideas so you can see their relationships quickly. Original practice exercise: a neighbourhood library This is an original learning exercise, not a recalled or predicted exam question. Ask a partner to read the following passage aloud once while you take notes: A neighbourhood library introduced a quiet study room because visitors found the open reading area too noisy. The room initially opened only in the afternoon. After students requested earlier access, the library also opened it in the morning during examination periods. Staff found that advance booking reduced queues, but some reserved seats stayed empty. They therefore asked visitors to release bookings they no longer needed. The example shows that a useful service also needs clear rules and regular feedback. Example notes Library → quiet room; open area noisy. Afternoon → morning during exams. Booking ↓ queues; unused seats → release bookings. Main lesson: service + rules + feedback. One possible spoken summary “The lecture describes how a neighbourhood library improved its study facilities. It introduced a quiet room because the main reading area was noisy, then extended opening hours during examinations. Booking helped reduce queues, although unused reservations created a problem. Visitors were asked to release unwanted bookings. Overall, the example highlights the importance of clear rules and feedback when improving a service.” This is an example of organising meaning, not a script to memorise for unrelated lectures. Practise within the official speaking time and shorten your own response if necessary. Review accuracy before adding speed Did you identify the central subject correctly? Did you preserve the reason for each change? Did you connect the example to the conclusion? Did you add anything the speaker did not say? Could a listener follow your sentences without seeing your notes? Record your answer, listen once for meaning and once for delivery. If you hesitate over a detail, simplify the sentence without changing the fact. Clear connections are more useful than rushing through every note. Common questions Should I write complete sentences while listening? Usually short labels are easier to manage. Choose notes that help you reconstruct a sentence afterwards, rather than trying to transcribe the audio. Can one template answer every lecture? A simple opening can help you start, but the main content must match the recording. A fixed paragraph cannot replace accurate listening.
