IELTS Writing Task 2 Editing: Review Your Essay One Check at a Time

Blissway IELTS Writing essay review one check at a time with notebook and editing pencil

Quick answer: Review an IELTS Writing Task 2 essay in layers: check the question and position, inspect paragraph logic, then correct recurring language errors. Looking for every possible mistake at once can distract you from larger problems such as an unanswered part of the question. This is an original editing routine, not a guaranteed band-score formula. It works best alongside regular writing practice and useful feedback. Check the answer before polishing vocabulary Read the task again. Underline its actual request and check whether your introduction, body and conclusion respond consistently. A well-written paragraph about the general topic is not enough if it avoids the question. For example, a question asking whether you agree with a policy needs a clear response to that policy. Do not replace it with a list of unrelated advantages. Mark any sentence that changes the subject, and decide whether it belongs. Read each paragraph as a short argument Identify the paragraph’s main point, explanation and support. Then check the connection between them. An example should demonstrate the point you just made, rather than introducing a different claim. If the paragraph contains two unrelated main ideas, choose one to develop or reorganise the material. Do not solve a logic problem by adding a linking word such as “therefore” when no consequence has actually been explained. Original editing example This fictional sentence is created for practice, not taken from an official test response. Before: “Public libraries is very beneficial because everyone always achieve success there.” Problems: The subject and verb do not agree, “beneficial” is vague without explanation, and the universal success claim is unsupported. Clearer version: “Public libraries can support students by providing quiet study space and access to books.” The revision fixes agreement and explains a plausible benefit without an absolute claim. It is an example of clearer wording, not a complete paragraph or an assigned band-level answer. In a real essay, develop the reason and keep it relevant to the question. Make your language check selective Use your own feedback history. If subject–verb agreement is a recurring issue, scan for it deliberately. If articles are a problem, examine noun phrases. A personal checklist is more actionable than trying to remember every grammar rule during one final read. Do subjects and verbs agree? Are sentence boundaries and punctuation clear? Are pronouns linked to an identifiable noun? Does the vocabulary express the intended meaning? Have absolute claims been justified or qualified? Do not replace an accurate familiar word with an uncertain synonym merely to sound advanced. Precision matters. Keep a useful phrase if it does the job clearly. A short review routine for practice Read the task and summarise your answer in one sentence. Check that each body paragraph supports that answer. Find one unsupported or unclear statement. Correct the language patterns you commonly miss. Read the revised sentence in its paragraph, not in isolation. When practising, keep the original and revised version. Write a brief explanation of each change. Over time, notice whether the same mistake appears less often in new essays. Rewriting only old work does not show whether you can apply the improvement independently. Frequently asked questions Should I rewrite the whole essay during the final check? Focus on meaningful corrections. Major rewrites can create new errors, especially if you have not planned them. Does editing replace planning? No. Planning helps establish a relevant position and paragraph structure before you write. Editing checks how well the draft delivers it. Can a checklist guarantee my score? No. Performance depends on the complete response. Use official assessment guidance and feedback to understand your preparation needs.
