IELTS Listening Distractors: Follow Corrections and Find the Right Answer

Quick answer: IELTS Listening distractors are details that sound plausible but do not answer the question. A speaker may mention an old arrangement, reject a suggestion or correct a number. Follow the whole exchange and match the confirmed information to the exact question, rather than choosing the first familiar word.

This guide offers original learning exercises for students studying independently or exploring IELTS coaching in Zirakpur. The examples are invented for practice, not recalled or predicted exam questions.

Start with the question and its instructions

Before listening, identify what the gap needs: a day, a room number, a name or a reason. The same conversation may contain several accurate details, but only one may fit your question. Underline the words that define what you need, such as current, previous or meeting time.

The official IELTS Listening format says recordings are heard once. For completion questions, follow the stated word or number limit; exceeding it loses the mark. Use official practice recordings to build these habits under realistic conditions.

Practice 1: an arrangement changes

“We originally planned the workshop for Tuesday, but the room is unavailable then. We have moved it to Thursday. Everyone has now confirmed Thursday.”

Question: The workshop will take place on ______. Write ONE WORD ONLY.

Answer: Thursday. Tuesday describes the abandoned plan. Thursday is the confirmed day. Writing “on Thursday” would add a second word and would not follow this exercise’s instruction.

Practice 2: the question asks about the past

“Our office used to be in Room 14. We moved to Room 26 last month, and that is where visitors should come now.”

Question: What was the previous room number? Write ONE NUMBER ONLY.

Answer: 14. Although 26 is the current location and appears later, this question asks about the previous room. “Always choose the last number” is therefore not a reliable strategy.

Practice 3: a suggestion is rejected

“Shall we meet at the café?” “It is too noisy for our discussion. Let’s meet at the library instead.” “Agreed—the library.”

Question: Where will the speakers meet? Write ONE WORD ONLY.

Answer: library. The café is a suggestion, not the agreement. Notice the reason for rejecting it and the confirmation that follows.

A review routine that explains your mistakes

  1. Attempt a short official recording once without stopping it.
  2. Check your answers, then replay only the relevant section during review.
  3. Write down the phrase that changed or confirmed the information.
  4. Label the error: missed correction, wrong time reference, misunderstood question or word-limit mistake.
  5. Practise a fresh example of that error type rather than memorising the original answer.

Words such as “actually,” “instead” and “used to” can help you notice a change, but they do not automatically determine an answer. Meaning, the question and the surrounding conversation still matter.

Frequently asked questions

Is every correction the answer?

No. A corrected detail only matters if it answers your question. The previous-room example shows why the time reference is important.

Should I stop listening after hearing a likely answer?

Keep following the relevant exchange. An early candidate may be rejected or changed. Avoid letting one gap distract you from the following question.

Can these exercises predict my band?

No. They isolate one listening skill and are not a scored test. Use a full official practice test and feedback to understand your wider needs.
