IELTS Listening map labelling becomes easier when you track a route from a known starting point instead of matching isolated words. Before the recording starts, identify the entrance, fixed landmarks and the answer locations. Then follow the speaker’s movement one step at a time.
Use the instructions on your particular task: some answers involve selecting letters, while others require words. The official IELTS map and plan guidance is a useful starting point for preparation.
Read the map before listening
- Find the starting point: an entrance, reception desk or marked location.
- Check whether north or another orientation is shown.
- Identify named landmarks that cannot move.
- Notice paths, junctions and possible answer spaces.
- Read whether you must write words or choose letters.
Do not assume that every map places north at the top unless the diagram indicates it. Equally, remember that a speaker’s left or right depends on the direction they are facing.
Use landmarks as checkpoints
Words such as “past,” “opposite” and “beyond” describe relationships. “Next to reception” places an object beside it; “opposite reception” puts it across from it. If the speaker says to walk past reception, do not stop at reception just because you heard its name.
Anchor each new instruction to your last confirmed point. This is more reliable than jumping to any label that sounds familiar.
Original route exercise
This fictional learning exercise is not a recalled or predicted test question. It is a text-based route drill, not an official test interface.
Imagine a rectangular campus. North is at the top. The main entrance is in the middle of the south edge. Reception stands directly north of the entrance. A path continues north from reception to a fountain. The library is immediately west of the fountain; the café is immediately east of it.
Ask someone to read this script once: “Enter through the main gate and walk straight ahead to reception. Continue along the same path until you reach the fountain. Turn left there, and you will find the library. The café is on the other side of the fountain.”
Check your answer
The library is west of the fountain. While walking north, a left turn takes you west. The café lies east of the fountain. The key is to connect the turning instruction to the direction of travel, not simply to the left side of a page.
Now change the starting point to the café and describe a route to the library. This helps you understand the layout instead of memorising one sequence of words.
Three mistakes to avoid
Choosing an answer as soon as you hear a landmark
A landmark may only be a reference point. Listen for the full relationship: behind it, beside it or past it.
Forgetting a correction
A speaker may correct an earlier statement. Keep listening before finalising the location. Practise this with our Listening distractors and corrections guide.
Remaining stuck after missing one answer
Use the next named checkpoint to regain your place. Spending too long on a missed location can make later answers harder to follow.
A useful home practice routine
Draw a simple fictional floor plan with four rooms and an entrance. Ask a partner to describe a route using two landmarks and one turn. Compare the route you followed with the intended destination. On the next attempt, change the starting point or add a correction.
When reviewing, label the cause of each error: vocabulary, orientation, missed checkpoint or answer instructions. A specific diagnosis gives you a more useful next practice task than simply repeating the whole recording.
Frequently asked questions
Should I write full sentences for map answers?
Follow the task instructions exactly. Do not add extra words if a short label or letter is required.
Is knowing direction vocabulary enough?
It helps, but you also need to follow the sequence and recognise reference points. Practise both language and orientation together.
